If you can articulate the goals and vision of complex initiatives… if you can clearly explain how something works and why it matters to diverse audiences… if you love scenic views of the iconic Rocky Mountains… then you could be the ideal candidate for the Senior Writer, Strategic Communications Manager position at the Colorado Community College System (CCCS).

The Senior Writer, Strategic Communications Manager’s primary function is to craft compelling narratives to help CCCS become a recognized leader on topics and issues related to the community college sector and demonstrate how System colleges benefit the community. Special focus will be on creating content that helps break down complex topics and uses language suitable for diverse audiences (natural language), ranging from professionals in academia to legislators and adolescents. The Communications Manager will also seek re-occurring publishing opportunities for the System President and other senior leadership to help CCCS become a respected community voice.

The Manager works with a high degree of autonomy and independence. As such, will be required to learn about issues and topics related to policy as it affects higher education/the community college sector; the Colorado legislative process; academic programs offered through CCCS colleges and CCConline; Career Technical Education programs; and additional topics that may be deemed relevant. Composition types include: articles for news and print, statements, fact sheets, reports, blog posts, ads, headliners, event programs, and brochures.

The Communications Manager will also provide support to the Director on materials needed to prepare the System President and staff required to testify on bills or speak to the public or press on matters related to CCCS, including legislation and emergency response. 

  • Bachelor’s degree required, in journalism, communications, or related field. 
  • Two years of relevant experience that includes:
    • Publishing articles, freelance work, or writing compositions.
    • Demonstrable portfolio of published articles.
  • Master’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field.
  • Five years of relevant experience that includes:
    • Publishing articles, freelance work, or writing compositions.
    • Demonstrable portfolio of published articles.
  • Professional communications experience within Higher Education

Characteristics of a successful applicant includes:

  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, as well as the ability to adopt the style, tone, and voice for various types of content and audiences.
  • Must be available 24/7 to appropriately respond to critical communication and writing needs.
